Games Start Date and Opening Ceremony
The 2008 Summer Olympics will start on Friday August 8th and run until August 24th at 08:08:08 in China which will make it 12:08:08 (just after noon) in the UK with the opening ceremondy being held at the Beijing National Stadium.
They've gone for 08:08:08 as "8" is a very auspicious number in Chinese culture.
Also expect loads of fireworks, dragons, and excitement - this should be one of the best opening ceremonies ever!

the chinese government is an absolute disgrace, and must have been thanking their lucky stars that there was an earthquake in their country. this meant that the eyes of the world were not turned towards the government's shameful and gutless treatment of the poor tibetan people. the government saw their chance, and with fearful alacrity went into rescue overdrive to save their citizens, something they would never do if the eyes of the world were watching. i am planning on disrupting the beijing games this year, but i will not say what i plan to do. all i can tell you is that there will be blood spilt.chinese blood

To the person who wants to spill chinese blood Id like to say, if you commit acts of mindless violnce against the people of china you are no better than the cruel thugs who oppressed the Tibetans and spilt their blood. Im sure you know the saying "2 wrongs don't make a right" so I would urge you to think carefully about how to intelligent ways of making the chinese goverment pay for theirs crimes against humanity, without using violence and lowering yourself to their level.

i think all previous comments purley only political statements and i fully supported to chinese people and Govt for the olympic games event.Dalai lama is only american donkey who play a game with people blood and blame to china. lama is supported by westren and american support because they cannot like the china progress in industry and commerce. So at the end congratulation for chinese bejing olympics 2008.

I came upon this page trying to discover when the Games started, and I'm fairly shocked by the mindless hate being spewed by practically every poster before me (not to mention their questionable grasp of English grammar).
Shut up and keep your poorly-formed political generalities to yourself. No one wants to hear it.
I'm personally looking forward to the Games. Despite how obviously politicized Bejiing 2008 is (like many of the other Games throughout history were), I'm still something of a true-believer in the Games orginal promise: that the nations of the world can put aside their differences and come together in solidarity for the purposes of peace.
Or maybe that's too much to ask of all of you.
I can't believe how ill-informed, and ignorant, most US-based American's are.
Come to China and live here for a year, then you can better judge how good or bad the Chinese government is. I've been here 2 years - and won't ever return to live in the USA!

why are people so angry, its true that the chinese government is abusing the tibetans but what can you do ? And i dont understand why some people are happy that the earthquake hit china. Innnocent chinese people not the government died there. Just because the government is bad doesnt mean that the people are evil too. Most of the people who died were good people.
many people are very unhappy for these game. i just want know when starting ceremony. i wish for love and guidance of god for all to guide all in straight path.
Let's separate politic and sports and just enjoy the games and the fantastic athletes what can be achieved with hard work.
There always have been political issues around the olympic games and always will be.
If politic continue to get in the way of the games, then let's cut out the Olympics once and for all or shut up and enjoy.

iOK, whoever started this blog (which sadly is one of the first sites that come up when you google "Olympics Start Date") should just wipe it out...or at least all these hateful, reckless comments. Why not try to stick to the title of the post "Games Start Date and Opening Ceremony"?
