Yet another boring exercise log

(May 17, 2008 06:46)
Thursday night I went from work to fencing so I did not exercise that night (unless one counts fencing). I spent most of that evening working out with a newer fencer and drilling on parries. This was for my benefit as much as his because while I parry well when standing still, I have a bad habit of dropping my blade when I parry three while moving backwards. There best way to stop this, imho, is to drill over and over and over again. Friday, I cut the grass and then went to the gym and did the usual leg day routine. I moved the weight on the reclying leg press up to 100 lbs. from 90 lbs. It wasn't as easy, but it also wasn't so challenging that I got a burn. I'm just a little hesitant to push that particular exercise. The calves weight went back to 85 because 90 lbs. felt a little stressf.. ... [Cont'd]

Schools out for summer!

(May 16, 2008 14:48)
School is out for summer. Well, college that is. The kids have all come home and it is great to see the amount of shear fencing that is going on at the school. We need to set up a fourth and fifth strip. I have been telling people down here for years about the lack of depth we have down here. You don’t have many generations of fencing competing against each other at the club level. People get into fencing and then get out of it down here like they change socks. We now have three generations of fencers working together to develop a nice competitive group over three different schools. The state games should be interesting. I thought it was very unnerving that with two NCAA programs down here that there were not more ex-ncaa fencers in the Carolinas. Maybe the next set of USFA officers will.. ... [Cont'd]

Sweet

(May 15, 2008 02:56)
I decided to eat a small bag of dark chocolate M&Ms today. I wasn't craving it; I was trying an experiment. What I discovered is that if I ate them very, very slowly, I did not really like M&Ms as much as I thought I did. What I liked was popping something into my mouth that I could chew upon while thinking. And I'm not craving more M&Ms. But that is NOT what's sweet tonight. What's sweet is that my knee feels better than it has in two years and for the first time in a long time, I'm beginning to think that maybe I will regain full functionality. After pilate class tonight, I iced my knee, stopped home to grab a quick meal, and headed to fencing. Before practice, I noticed the knee was feeling good and the more I walked, the better it felt. I no longer have that rusty hinge sensation and .. ... [Cont'd]

double-weapon lesson

(May 15, 2008 01:35)
Who was there? Aside from Jessi2, Ben, and Nick, who left early, there was Meng, Jessi1, Kiersten, Mike, Tom, Bob, Ahren, Matt, Dan (back from school) & Dick. I think I fenced all of them--did I fence Matt? I don't remember--five touch bouts, except for Tom whom I fenced a ten-touch bout because he's not participating in the pride challenge. Ahren was, as usual, practicing something, but I beat him 5-0 because I was doing what he taught me last week, so he wins anyway. I lost to Mike; my distance sucked and I was rushing because I knew Ahren was waiting to give me my lesson. If I want to beat Mike I have to really take my time. The lesson was all bladework, one of those lessons where the coach has a weapon in each hand. He's getting pretty good at those. The first one was beat-cut to hand.. ... [Cont'd]

Not fencing - just funny

(May 14, 2008 17:41)
I was in PHX right for the last couple of days and Avis there charges you $10.50 for gas if you drive less than 75 miles and do not show them a receipt. So I stop where I usually do and the machine is giving me trouble taking my Amex. So I am trying it and trying it with a look of consternation on my face and suddenly I hear “Your card has been rejected, please see the attendant.” I think that’s a new twist here. So after a few more tries I hear, “If you are an attorney, please see the attendant.” I look up with a WTF, how did they know sort of look on my face and the COO is standing there laughing. He snuck up when he saw me having trouble. So we immediately began telling everyone when we hit the office an hour ago. Ah Revenge will be sweet. ... [Cont'd]

Easterns

(May 12, 2008 23:48)
This weekend was the first time for two things for me: Visiting Toronto and meeting somebody from fencing.net who I didn't already know in person. I met Glowstix in the morning and the two of us warmed up together before seniors. After that he ended up going 4-1 in his pool and I went 5-1 in mine. My only loss was to Arseni Tikhomirov, who is basically a miniature version of his father and has improved a lot recently. Anyways going into d.e.'s I was seeded 5th and got a bye through the first round. In the next round I had a young fencer from my club who I had coached in his first round win. I won that one pretty easily and found out that I had to fence glowstix in the next round. I had a lot of difficulty scoring attacks on him when we warmed up so I fenced very cautiously in our match.
