China To Shut More Factories For Games

Reuters reports that China will shut 40 more factories for the period of the games in an attempt to reduce the problem of pollution which has received so much coverage in recent months.

These factories are some 70 miles from the capital and will be closed from July 25th to September 20th. So by the looks of it they're taking the problem very seriously.

The thing is, I'm no pollution expert, but doesn't pollution hang around for a while? Will this be enough?

There's also talk of the local population suffering in the name of the games - with forced evictions etc. What about the economic implications of these factories closing? Will the workers receive compensation? Will they have to take obligatory holidays?

On a more positive note. Earlier this week, cars that don't meet the emissions standards won't be allowed into Beijing and from July 20th the city will launch traffic control measures which will take 3 million cars off the road by using the odd, even plate system.

I think someone's getting through to them!

British Team Sets Target of 41 Medals

Do you think the British team will achieve the target of 41 medals? They're aiming for eighth place in the overall medals table which is two better than we achieved in Athens.

Although we're expected to get 6 medals just with the cycling team, I thing its a tall order - but aren't targets meant to encourage the entrants to doing their absolute best?!

If we did obtain 41 medals that'll be our best tally since the 1920 Antwerp games!

I sure hope we will get the target - but what do you think?

Will you be boycotting the 2008 Olympics?

The Telegraph has received some feedback about whether people will be boycotting the 2008 Olympic games in China.

If you've got half an hour then it makes interesting reading - you'll end up with more of a balanced view than can be gained from watching the highly-impartial BBC.

Whatever side you're on, and there are more than two, you'll end up either angered, educated or indifferent.

Can't Ignore the Tibet Demostrations

To be honest I've lost the angel of the demonstrations with the relaying of the Olympic torch. From what I can gather it's about violence and the restrictions of free speech in Tibet. But haven't many of the demonstrations been the exact opposite from the message that the protesters are saying they're about?

Most of the demonstrations so far have been mildly violent, innocent people being pushed out of the way and knocked to the ground as the torch-carriers are grappled with?

My view is that these demonstrators may have a legitimate point of view, but presenting it in this way only be seen as hypocritical. Wouldn't there be a better way of getting your message accross?

It just seems the point of the demonstrations have got lost and the demonstrations themselves have become the news ....

Cheap Flights To The Olympics in Bejing, China

If you're looking for cheap flights to the Bejing OlympicsThen Virgin Atlantic have some cracking deals. From the UK they fly from London to Shanghai for around £816.10 on Tuesday 5th August. It's £1277.10 if you go on Saturday 2nd. and £764.10 most other days around then - that's economy prices and coming back just after the Olympics have finished. The flights leave at 14:25 and arrive around 08:40 the next day local time. For premium economy the prices are aroun £2319.10 return. For Upper Class you're looking at around £2,730.10 to £2,993.10 each. I've flown Virgin Atlantic tonnes of times and they're absolutely amazing (much better than BA - especially with all their Terminal 5 problems at the moment) - I'd never fly BA again!
